John Fromer, Merryspring program director, will lead a walk to the vernal pool at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, April 28, at 12 p.m.  

See and examine wood frog and spotted salamander eggs under hand lenses (supplied) or on an iPad connected to a microscope on site. Learn about the importance of vernal pools in their early development.

"Spring is an amazing time in the amphibian world – now is the time when frogs and salamanders are migrating from their wintertime woodland hideouts to vernal pools," said Georges River Land Trust, in a news release.

Join GRLT for a vernal pool program at the Rockland Bog on Sunday, May 3, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Vernal pools are special, ephemeral bodies of water where frogs, salamanders, and insects breed.

"On this guided exploration, participants will learn about these incredible, small creatures and get up close to their pools," said GRLT.

United Midcoast Charities (UMC) will hold a Spring Volunteer Recruitment Expo, a free public event designed to connect community members with nonprofit organizations in need of volunteer support. The expo will take place Wednesday, April 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Flanagan Community Center, 61 Limerock Street, Rockland.

Rockland Nursing Circle meets third Friday each month

This circle welcomes expectant and nursing families of all stripes with their nurslings of all ages.

The community is invited to a free community Tea Party on Sunday, April 26, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Belfast Boat House. Homemade scones and freshly brewed tea will be provided at no cost.

At the same time and location, the annual organic seedling sale will take place, featuring large quantities of various seedlings generously donated by Village Side Farm in Freedom, all proceeds going to support the Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County.

THOMASTON — Join Georges River Land Trust and the Maine Forest Service for a woodland walk looking for signs of spring and practicing mindfulness, Friday, April 24, from 4:30 - 6 p.m., at the Rockland Bog Preserve in Thomaston.

"This walk is a great way to explore Georges River Land Trust’s new Beechwood Street trailhead to the Rockland Bog, the largest peatland complex in midcoast Maine," said GRLT, in a news release.

ORONO, Maine — Graduate students spend years taking courses, completing research and passing exams. But the most important thing they gain is not reflected on a transcript.

“It’s not exactly what we learned,” Patrick Breeding said. “It’s that we learned how to learn — how to go out and seek new information, take it in and understand it.”

For Amber Boutiette, that growth continues long after graduation.

War Memorial Post 30 celebrates Vietnam Veterans

On March 29, 2026, War Memorial Post 30 in Camden, Maine, opened its doors for the 2nd annual Vietnam Veterans recognition luncheon. The post welcomed 15 Vietnam and era veterans in for lunch and a program. In total there were 34 vets and guests in attendance, according to District 6 Legion Commander Jeff Sukeforth.

The program was presented by U.S. Navy (ret.) Master Chief Petty Officer Rodney Lynch on his time in country as a storekeeper and riverboat member. Lynch presented a slideshow of photos from his time in Vietnam.
