BRISTOL — Visitors of all physical abilities can now explore the quiet woodlands of Keyes Woods Preserve in Bristol, following the completion of a new 0.3-mile accessible loop trail by Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust. Built to meet or exceed Architectural Barriers Act forest standards, the pathway becomes the third universally accessible trail in Coastal Rivers' network.

With this addition, Coastal Rivers now offers three fully accessible trails, with two located in Damariscotta and now one in Bristol. The new trail at Keyes Woods Preserve allows visitors of all physical abilities to experience the preserve’s tranquil woodlands, hemlock-shaded streams, and scenic surroundings along the Pemaquid River.

The new trail is four feet wide, very gently graded, and finished with a firm surface of packed stone dust, according to Coastal Rivers, in a news release. It makes a loop from the van-accessible parking area, curving through the woods. A sturdy bench invites visitors to sit at an overlook above a woodland stream.

According to news release, the project directly reflects Coastal Rivers' core values: striving to be welcoming, caring, trustworthy and adaptable.

"Expanding universal accessibility is also a central pillar of Coastal Rivers’ Strategic Framework," said Coastal Rivers. "Under the strategic goal to Broaden Public Access, the land trust works to reduce physical, informational, and cultural barriers so everyone can enjoy local lands and waters."

"We want everyone to feel welcomed on our lands and trails,” said Coastal Rivers Executive Director Steven Hufnagel. “By expanding our network of accessible pathways into Bristol, we hope to invite more neighbors and visitors to connect with the natural beauty of the Damariscotta-Pemaquid region.”
