Cony spoils Oceanside baseball season opener

ROCKLAND — The Oceanside varsity baseball team opened the 2022 campaign at home Wednesday, April 20 as the Mariners hosted Cony at Morrill Field in Rockland. 

The Oceanside season, however, is starting with an 0-1 record as Cony knocked off the host Mariners 6-2. 

Cony tallied one run in the third inning, four in the fifth and one in the seventh, while collecting four hits, committing one error and stranding eight runners on base. 

Oceanside, meanwhile, plated one run in each the first and third innings. The Mariners recorded six eights, two errors and left six on base. 

James Presti and Braydon Barbeau (four shutout innings) worked the pitcher’s mound for Cony while Oceanside hurlers included Duncan Oakes-Nelsen (4.2 innings, nine strikeouts), Bryson Mattox and Connor Calderwood.

Among the notable offensive contributions for Oceanside were two singles, a double and a RBI from Jacob Watkinson as well as a double from Alex Bartlett. 

Cony’s most notable offensive contribution came in the form of a double from Braydon Barbeau. 

The next for Oceanside will be a road contest Friday, April 22 against Lawrence at 10 a.m.
