Oceanside baseball stuns Cony in playoff opener

AUGUSTA — The No. 12 Oceanside varsity baseball traveled Monday, June 6 to Augusta to challenge No. 5 Cony in the opening round of the playoffs, and returned to Rockland with a victory in hand. 

Now, the Mariners await the outcome of the Belfast-Lawrence contest Tuesday, June 7 to see who they will play in the quarterfinal round Thursday, June 9. 

Oceanside (7-10 record) plated two runs in the first inning, five in the fourth and one in the fifth en route to its 8-2 victory. Cony tallied one run in each the third and fourth innings. 

The visiting Mariners racked up eight hits, committed nine errors and stranded 10 runners on base. Cony, meanwhile, recorded five hits, had four errors and left nine on base. 

Duncan Oakes-Nelsen pitched a complete game for Oceanside recording two earned runs, five hits, three strikeouts, three walks and three hit-by-pitches. 

Pitching for Cony were Kam Douin (0.1 Inn, two earned runs, three hits, two walks), James Presti (2.1 innings, two strikeouts, four walks), Landon Foster (0.1 innings, four runs, three earned runs, two hits, two strikeouts, two walks) and Brayden Barbeau (four innings, two runs, one earned run, three hits, one strikeout, one walk). 

Notable hitters for Oceanside included Connor Calderwood (two singles) and Oakes-Nelsen (single, double).

Cony’s notable hitters were David Kibler (two singles) and Brayden Barbeau (double).
