NEWPORT — The Oceanside varsity baseball team hit the road Saturday, May 14 to challenge Nokomis in Newport. 

In a battle of a contest, the visiting Mariners ultimately were edged by the hosts 6-5 to fall to 3-6 on the season. 

Oceanside recorded one run in each of the first three innings and two in the seventh inning while Nokomis scored two runs in the opening frame, one in the fifth and three in the sixth. 

Oceanside tallied seven hits, committed one error and stranded seven runners on base. Nokomis, meanwhile, recorded 12 hits, three errors and eight runners left on base. 

Pitching for Oceanside were Jacob Watkinson (five innings, five runs, four earned runs, 11 hits, three strikeouts, one walk) and Duncan Oakes-Nelsen (one inning, one earned run, one hit, one strikeout). 

On the mound for Nokomis were Grady Hartsgrove (1.2 innings, two runs, one hit, one strikeout, two walks, two hit-by-pitches), Connor Sides (4.2 innings, three earned runs, five hits, four strikeouts, three walks) and Ashten Howell (0.2 innings, one hit, one strikeout). 

Notable hitters for Oceanside were Alex Bartlett (two doubles), Duncan Oakes-Nelsen (two singles) and Jacob Watkinson (double). 

Notable hitters for Nokomis were Owen Upton (two singles), Mike Scharf (three singles) and Jordan Hawthorne (two singles).
