CAMDEN — United Midcoast Charities presented its Award for Philanthropic Excellence to Dr. Clifford Dacso, MD, MPH, at its annual Rising Tide event on August 20, "recognizing his extraordinary commitment to the health and well-being of the Midcoast community," said UMC, in a news release.

This year, UMC invited the community at large to nominate individuals whose generosity, leadership, and service are making a difference across Knox and Waldo counties.

“Opening the nomination process to the public was another way for UMC to bring the Rising Tide spirit to life,” said Becca Gildred, Executive Director at UMC, in the news release. “It recognizes that everyone has something to contribute, and that strong communities are built by people who show up for one another.”

The response was remarkable, according to UMC. Every nominee represented an outstanding example of community philanthropy and service and shed light on just how many unsung heroes we have here.

Dr. Dacso was nominated for his years of volunteer service to the Knox Clinic and the broader community. Since beginning to volunteer at the clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Dacso has provided medical care to uninsured and underinsured patients, served on the clinic's Board of Directors, mentored staff and volunteers, supported fundraising efforts, and helped expand access to primary care. Today he serves as its 100%-Volunteer Chief Clinical Officer.

His community service extends well beyond the clinic. He provides guidance to the St. George Paramedicine program, serves as volunteer Health Officer for the Town of South Thomaston, supports community health initiatives, and volunteers as a firefighter.

“Cliff has made the Midcoast his community in every sense of the word. He gives generously, leads quietly, and makes a real difference in the lives of the people around him,” said Kristin Sidwell, Outreach Chair at United Midcoast Charities. “What was especially meaningful this year was seeing how many people across our community recognized others who are doing the same. The nominees reminded us that philanthropy isn't one thing or one kind of person. It's the combination of time, talent, leadership, advocacy, generosity and simply showing up.”

UMC's Rising Tide Award for Philanthropic Excellence recognizes an individual whose generosity, leadership and commitment have made a lasting difference in the Midcoast. This year's nominees demonstrated just how many ways there are to strengthen a community.

Other nominees recognized this year included:

● Alex Turner, recognized for making a significant impact in Belfast, particularly through service to the Waldo County YMCA.

● Susan Taylor, recognized for her ability to lift and strengthen the people who work alongside her and those seeking housing at Midcoast Habitat for Humanity.

● Laura Hopkins, recognized for consistently providing legal guidance to Homeworthy clients and for helping the Rockport Boat Club become a nonprofit and establish funding so young people can learn to sail regardless of their family's financial circumstances.

● Christine LeGore, recognized for her committed advocacy for the Restorative Justice Project and Family Harbor House in Waldo County.

The award reflects the spirit behind UMC's Rising Tide theme: when people share what they have to offer, the entire community benefits.
