Oakes-Nelsen strikes out 19 in narrow Oceanside extra innings loss

WATERVILLE — Although the Oceanside varsity baseball was narrowly edged 3-2 in 11 innings on the road Monday, April 25 against Waterville, Duncan Oakes-Nelsen stole the show for the visiting Mariners with a school-record 19 strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work on the pitcher’s mound. 

The Oceanside hurler allowed two earned runs, four hits and one walk. Connor Calderwood, who relieved Oakes-Nelsen in the eighth, worked the mound for four innings and allowed an earned run, two hits, a walk and fanned seven batters.

Pitching for Waterville were Gabe Hubbard (six innings, two earned runs, eight hits, five strikeouts, three walks) and Joe Hamelin (five innings, two hits, five strikeouts, two walks). 

Oceanside tallied its pair of runs in the third inning thanks to a Calderwood RBI single that drove in Austin Chilles, while Jacob Watkinson scored on a wild pitch. The visitors collected 10 hits, committed three errors and left nine runners on base.

Waterville plated a run in the fourth inning (Hamelin RBI double plated Spencer Minihan), seventh (Wyatt Gradie RBI single scored Hubbard) and 11th inning (Xavier Hamelin’s two-out RBI single scored Minihan). 

The hosts, meanwhile, tallied six hits, recorded no errors and abandoned nine runners on base. 

Repeat hitters for Oceanside were Alex Bartlett (three singles), Calderwood (three singles) and Bryson Mattox (two singles). 

Repeat hitters for Waterville were Hamelin (single, triple) and Minihan (single, double).

Oceanside, now sitting at 0-3 on the season, will now look to earn its first win of the season Wednesday, April 27 against Nokomis at home with a 4 p.m. start.
