Lincoln Academy strong second quarter lifts Eagles past Camden Hills

Wed, 01/13/2016 - 9:15am

ROCKPORT Despite the threat of bad weather, the Camden Hills athletic director Steve Alex made the call to cancel the freshman game and move the JV and varsity start times up. The plan worked, the games got played and they both were very good games with Lincoln Academy sweeping the night.

Camden Hills came out on fire Tuesday playing very up-tempo defense, double teaming when ever they could and walked away with a 14-8 first quarter lead. That changed in the second quarter when the starting five were not rested enough to keep up the pressure. Lincoln Academy took advantage outscoring Camden by 14 points in the second quarter to take a 27-19 lead into the half time.

The tempo changed in the second half as Camden Hills could not continue the up-tempo style of play, but Lincoln Academy needed a little break as well allowing Camden to cut the lead a little to 43-37 heading into the final quarter. The eagles stepped it up in the final quarter outscoring the Windjammers 19-13 for the 62-51 win.

Despite being very outsized under the basket, Mara Dostie and Kristen Keiran did a remarkable job boxing out and rebounding in front of girls much taller. What also kept the score close was the off shooting night that the Eagles had. They would sometimes get three or four shots off offensive rebounds and miss all of them.

Scoring for Lincoln Academy were, Brie Wajer with 16 points; Samantha Burke 11; Dorothy Hodous and Alyx York 10 each; Cagney O'Brian and , one is Traina five each; Chloe Hallowell and Brianna Genthner two each; and Olivia York one.

The Eagles were 13-of-18 (73 percent) from the foul line and they knocked down four 3-pointers. Two from Hodous and one each from Wajer and A. York.

The Windjammers were led by Charlotte Messer with a game high 17 points; Dostie 10; Mya Wiley seven; Maddie Bowman six; Lauren Miller five; and Keiran three.

The Windjammers were 16-of-24 (67 percent) from the foul line and they had one 3-pointer from Dostie.

Messer had a very good night for the Windjammers scoring in every quarter and getting stronger as the game went on. Messer was also 7-of-9 from the foul line. Driving to the basket with her size it is very hard for a defender to stop her without fouling and last night that put her on the foul line where you want her.

Wajer was the catalyst on the offense for the Eagles directing the floor and scoring nine of her 16 points in the second half. Of course when you have three girls under the basket 6 feet 2 inches, one 5 feet 11 inches and one five feet 10 inches playing against a team who's two tallest girls hardly play and the center on the team is 5 feet 6 inches tall you are in trouble and for the Windjammers that is how it is most nights.

Right now Camden Hills finds itself in a very unfamiliar place in the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings. Last place in Class A North at 2-9. Lincoln Academy plays in Class B South and they are now 10-1.

Next up for the Windjammers are the Oceanside Mariners Thursday, Jan. 14 in Rockland with a 6:30 start time. Lincoln Academy will travel to Belfast for a 6:30 start on Thursday as well.
