CUSHING — Tim Caverly, Maine author and advocate for the Maine outdoors, will lead “A Hard Road to Wilderness,” a trip through the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, in a live event Sunday, June 9, at 2 p.m., at the Cushing Public Library. The Thomaston Public Library is co-sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a majestic, 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams winding through the heart of northern Maine’s vast forests.

“It is one of Maine’s finest treasures, a singular place for adventurers, sportsmen, and those who wish to take refuge and finds solace in its beauty,” said Wendy Roberts, in a news release.

Many have understood the need to care for the Allagash. In 1966, the people of Maine, through the Maine State Legislature, created the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, in order “to preserve, protect, and enhance the wilderness character of this unique area.” It is Maine’s only designated Wild and Scenic River.

Tim Caverly has spent most of his life in Maine’s outdoors. Working in the outdoors was a family tradition, as his father was a fire warden with the Maine Forest Service, and his brother was a ranger in Baxter State Park. His 32-year career with the Maine Department of Conservation brought him many noteworthy assignments, including an 18-year stint as supervisor of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Now retired, Caverly has written and published 13 books about Maine for both children and adults. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Machias, and a member of the New England Outdoor Writers Association.
