BELFAST — Waldo County Sheriff Jason Trundy said June 10 that a sergeant was involved in a shooting that killed a Belfast man.

On June 10, 2024 at approximately 1:28 p.m., Daniel Ryan, 65, of 63 Cedar Street, Apt. 3 in Belfast called the Waldo County Dispatch Center and reported he was going to burn his apartment building down if law enforcement did not respond, according to Trundy, in a news release that was issued by the Sheriff’s Office and Belfast Police Department.

Law enforcement personnel from the Belfast Police Department and Waldo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the apartment.

“Upon arrival, Mr. Ryan continued to threaten to burn the apartment building down,” said Trundy. “As law enforcement made entry, Mr. Ryan continued to threaten and charged the officers with a gas can that was on fire. Mr. Ryan was shot and killed by Waldo County Sheriff’s Sgt. Nicholas Oettenger.

Sgt. Oettenger will be placed on administrative leave while the Office the Attorney General investigates, as is standard practice, said Trundy.
