The Camden Hills varsity boys lacrosse team collected a pair of wins recently, one coming against Cheverus in a nail-biter and the other against Morse. 

“The last few weeks have been great for our team with two great games and a greatly improved team dynamic,” said Camden Hills player Quinn Riordan. “I think we came out of our game against Messalonskee last week with a really positive mindset and brought that forward into our two games against Cheverus and Morse.”

Offensively, the Windjammers played with patience and the fire for goal scoring, and saw how productive they can be when moving as an offensive unit and scoring a bunch of goals in both of those games, Riordan commented.

On the defensive end Camden Hills is improving its communication and aggression, working on pressing the ball and organizing our slides and played really well man down defense near the end of the both games, Riordan said. 

“Overall, it was great couple weeks and looking forward to what’s to come,” Riordan noted. 

Camden Hills 9, Cheverus 8 (April 29)

Finlay Fitch secured the game-winning goal from Owen McManus with 1:04 left.

Cheverus had the last shot of the game, but goalie Jacob Talbot, junior defenders Owen Hotchkin, Quinn Riordan, Billy Kurzius, Dylan Lowe, and midfielders Cam Lawrence and Eben Weislogel held Cheverus scoreless in the final minute to capture the win.

Leading the way for Camden Hills were Finlay Fitch (four goals, assist), Owen Hotchkin (two goals), Owen McManus (goal, three assists), Barlow Marshall (two assists), Blake Christie (goal), and Eben Weislogel (goal).

River Pinkham had seven groundballs and seven face-off wins, Billy Kurzius had two groundballs and four caused turnovers.

Jacob Talbot had six saves in the goalie net for Camden Hills. 

Meanwhile, for Cheverus: TJ Saulter (four goals), Brogan Danzig (goal), Luke McNabb (goal, assist), Quinn Gleason (goal), Ryan Franceschi (goal) and Matt Hahn (assist). 

Cameron Day recorded 12 saves for Cheverus. 

“It was a well-matched game and we battled until the end to get the winning goal with 1:04 left in the game,” said Eben Weislogel, of the Camden Hills win. “We had freshman goalie Jake Talbot make numerous 1v1 saves late in the game, which definitely kept us in it. We had a big defensive stand in the last minute and a half that helped us secure the victory.”

Camden Hills 14, Morse 11 (May 2)

On a rainy and cold day, Camden Hills traveled to face the Morse Shipbuilders for a big Class B regional contest. The Windjammers fought for a big 14 to 11 win after trailing early in the game against a determined and well-coached Morse team.

Scoring for the Windjammers were Finlay Fitch (four goals, four assists), Emmet Marshall (four goals, assist), Owen McManus (two goals, four assists), Barlow Marshall (two goals), Eben Weislogel (two goals), Owen Hotchkin (assist), and River Pinkham (assist).

River Pinkham (six), Owen McManus (six), Eben Weislogel (six), Owen Hotchkin (five), Billy Kurzius (four) and Cam Lawrence (four) led the Windjammers in ground ball recoveries. 

Jacob Talbot made 11 big saves, including numerous 1v1 opportunities, in the goalie net for Camden Hills. 

Meanwhile, for Morse: Sam Prager (five goals), Sebastian Lafer (goal), Bjorn Langord (two goals, assist), Tristan Beveridge (two goals) and Ayden Reno (goal). 

Michael Martin tallied 13 saves for Morse. 

Following the contest, a trio of Windjammers shared their thoughts on the win:

“The offense had 14 goals and could’ve had more with the chances that were made, said Owen McManus. “The offense had a good game, we were slowing it down more than we had been and attacking spots and getting good looks. Middies and attack both helped make offense and create chances with passes and dodges.”

“We came back from a 4-2 deficit in the first and finally hit our stride in the second and third quarters,” said Owen Hotchkin. “The Morse goalie put up a solid battle but we were able to pull through. Even with the extremely wet and rainy conditions we were able to persevere and play some good defense. We matched Morse’s physicality and we had to play all 48 minutes to earn that win.”

"Our away victory against Morse, another determined and well coached team, further proved that our team is ready to play through adversities with smiles on our faces,” said Emmet Marshall. “Even with heavy rain falling from the sky, everyone on our team, whether on the bench or the field was loud and proud.”
