ROCKPORT — Charlie Griebel, one of the senior captains of the Camden Hills Regional High School boys lacrosse program, received a pair of prestigious accolades.

Griebel received the U.S. Lacrosse Bob Scott Award and was named to the US Lacrosse All-Academic American Team for Maine Lacrosse.

He is the first Camden Hills lacrosse player to receive both of these awards by U.S. Lacrosse, according to Camden Hills head coach Harrison Rogers. 

The Bob Scott Award recognizes the high school senior in their lacrosse region who goes above and beyond in service to their team, school, and community. These athletes, who truly honor the game of lacrosse, are invested in the development of the game in their town and are exemplary teammates. In addition, they must be outstanding students with high academic achievement and serve as role models within their school community.

A boys’ All-Academic American honoree is a player who exhibits exemplary lacrosse skills, good sportsmanship on the field, and represents high standards of academic achievement in the classroom.

Griebel was a two-year captain for the Camden Hills lacrosse and ice hockey teams, and ended the lacrosse season with 20 goals, 18 assists, and 51 ground balls as primarily a midfielder, but also played every position on the field.

“Charlie is the type of player that when the team needed someone to play goalie or long-pole defense, he would take on the challenge and play a different position for the benefit of the team,” said Rogers, a feat shown when he made 11 saves on 15 shots while playing in goal during a game against Gardiner, and helped lead Camden Hills to their second ever win against Gardiner.

“On offense, Charlie is our most unselfish player and always initiates the offense and looks to get all his teammates involved,” said Rogers. “He often creates the second hockey assist that does not register on the score book, but he was the one who beat his guy 1 on 1 to draw the quick slide. Also, he is great in the clearing and transition games in the open field.”

Furthermore, Rogers said: “Charlie is the type of player that any coach wants on the field because he shows positivity and encourages his teammates, and always works hard to improve both on and off of the field. He consistently supported his team and his teammates, and has helped to grow the lacrosse program at Camden Hills and in our region.”

Griebel also represented Midcoast Maine while playing on the Maine Mussels elite teams all throughout high school and was on the Maine Select Team, which was composed of the best players in Maine, in the summer of 2021.

Off of the field, Griebel was a member of the National Honor Society and became the president of the school’s Habitat for Humanity Club after helping to re-establish the program at the high school.

He also has volunteered to help coach youth sports in the region and has participated in other community projects throughout his high school career.

During his senior year, he received the CHRHS Principal's Leadership Award, Male Athlete of the Year at CHRHS, and the American Legion Citizenship Award.
