PTSD, mTBI, PPCS, and Hyperbaric Oxygen

Science shows that hyperbaric oxygen - the space-age therapy most frequently recommended for decompression sickness and wound healing - has a lot more to offer. Boosting oxygen carried by red blood cells and oxygen dissolution in blood has body-wide impacts, improving circulation, spurring the formation of new blood vessels, and supporting production of our cells’ energy currency ATP. [1]

This influx of oxygen under pressure triggers the production of antioxidant enzymes in the immune system, creating a medium- or long-term anti-inflammatory state that can alleviate chronic inflammatory conditions after a course of at least 20 sessions.

While medical gatekeeping may prevent many who might benefit from hyperbaric oxygen from accessing it, Camden Hyperbaric offers what is known as mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) to the public.

Some studies have shown that mHBOT:

  • Improved post-concussive and PTSD symptoms, cognitive processing speed, sleep quality, and balance in US military service members [2]

  • Improved post-concussion and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms, memory, cognitive functions, depression, anxiety, sleep, and quality of life in civilian and military subjects with mTBI/PPCS [3]

  • Led to “symptomatic improvements, as well as Reliable Change or Clinically Significant changes…for patients treated with 40-60 HBOTS over a wide range of pressures” in those with PTSD [4]

  • Increased neuronal activity after a 2-month period of HBOT compared with the control period…Pre- and post-treatment SPECT imaging showed that HBOT led to restoration of neuronal activity in stunned areas” in those with mTBI [5]

  •  Led to “significant improvements and magnitude of improvements in …symptoms, cognition, mood, quality of life, and imaging” as well as reductions in suicidal ideation and narcotic and psychoactive medication usage for at least six months in those with PTSD and PPCS [6]

As someone who has been massively impacted by intractable inflammatory issues myself, I’m pleased to offer hyperbaric oxygen to the community - whether for tuning health, savoring the deep relaxation involved for its own sake, or for psychonauts interested in nootropic pursuits.
