It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Amos M. Benner on July 26, 2026, at his family camp in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. He was 47 years old and a lifelong resident of St. George, Maine.

Amos was born in Rockport, Maine on October 14, 1978. He attended St. George Elementary School and Georges Valley High School in Thomaston, Maine. He was widely known within the community as a hard worker. His first job was working at the Great Eastern Mussel Farm at Long Cove in St. George. He spent many of his adult years working as a sternman on lobster boats. Outside of the lobster season, he would pick up jobs in carpentry and roofing, often working side by side with family members and friends. More recently, he had been learning the plumbing trade, working with his brother Eli. He was skilled with the use of a chainsaw and enjoyed clearing land and processing trees into firewood. For years, he would cut, split, deliver, and stack firewood for his parents.

Those close to Amos would describe him as an old soul. He had "old-fashioned" taste in many aspects of how he lived his life—from dreaming of having his own farm with animals to listening to "Golden Oldies" country music with his wife while sitting by the campfire on a Saturday night. He did not own a cell phone or have an email account, and he was proud of it. He believed in and strove to be a hardworking, honest, and loyal man. He had a selfless heart and was often the first to lend a helping hand to others. He was always a man of his word and fiercely protective of those he loved.

Amos enjoyed playing with both of his children when they were young, as evidenced by the smile on his face in family photos of them together. Though he may have seemed like a man of few words, he would want them both to know how proud he was of the type of people they have grown to be and how much he truly loved them.

He will be forever loved by his wife, Tabitha Benner, and two adult children, Lauren Curtis and Aaron Benner. He leaves behind his mother, Donna Masterson, and stepfather, James Masterson, as well as his father, Michael Benner, and stepmother, Marianne Groth. He has three remaining younger siblings: Eli Benner, Liam Masterson, and Audra Blake (Masterson), as well as his stepbrother, T.J. Groth, and stepsister, Carrie Groth. He will be sorely missed by his aunts and uncles, as well as his nieces and nephews, to whom he was proud to be known as "Uncle Amos."

He was predeceased by his stepbrother, Adam Groth. He was also predeceased by his two closest friends, Aaron Paulson and Adam Warner. The three of them were often referred to as "The Triple A's," and Amos always held their friendship close to his heart.

There will not be any formal funeral proceedings. His family will hold a Celebration of Life at Wiley's Corner Grange on August 22, 2026, at 1 p.m. All who knew him are welcome to come and join together to share memories over food and refreshments with his family and friends. There will be a guestbook on-site for those wanting to sign and share private memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests monetary donations go to the Maine Farmland Trust at mainefarmlandtrust.org to support Maine's local farmers and agriculture.
