'What fresh hell is this' is an expression attributed to Dorothy Parker whenever she heard the doorbell or the telephone. These days a similar reaction occurs when we see/hear or get smacked online with daily onslaughts from the international and/or domestic stage.

We, here in far away Maine, have been able to compartmentalize the horrors that we witness online. Recently, it all came very close to home with the killing of our neighbor, Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, at the hands of ICE. There was initial outrage resulting in the memorial, GoFundMe options and a shadow Congressional hearing. Things happen when people step up and respond.

The outcry has dissipated. What is happening with the investigation? Where has the media gone? Where are the protesters putting their collective energy? It is normal for us to adapt to and normalize this and other horrific events. Cognitive adaptation is often viewed as a strength but in this case becomes a liability as this tragedy recedes to the back of our minds.

I’ve learned that ICE is ramping up activity in Maine, primarily in southern Maine and Lewiston. Agents are working seven days a week and abducting between three to five people a day. And we can do something about it.

It is time to put the pressure on and get out from our “armchair quarterbacking”
