Story Time: When one bad apple author ruins it for the others

Copied from a real Reddit post on an author thread:

So, I go to my local Barnes & Noble to arrange a book signing in a few months, and they say all willing, except, "We're going to move you to a new spot this year."

Now usually BnN puts its local authors by the front door, so they're the first thing patrons sees they walk in. That's now gone.

Shouldn't be a problem, but what was wrong with the old spot?"

"Directive from Barnes & Noble corporate. No author in any Barnes & Noble is allowed to be by the front door anymore. Apparently there was an incident in New York City."

An 'incident?'

"Yes, a local author got way too aggressive, way too in your face with a few customers trying to come in, and scared some of them. And they filed a complaint. So all authors are in the back now."

:::facepalm:::

I discussed this before, how some authors are very aggressive with people just trying to walk by, and how it wasn't really my style.

But I can well imagine some author getting desperate about low sales or maybe even too excited to be there and jumping up at customers as they try to walk in "Hey hey buy my book now!"

As a guest I always thought that kind of attitude was a turn off anyway. And as I recall, a lot of people here said my author style was way too timid and this sort of thing was exactly what I NEEDED to do if I wanted to sell books.
