Maine troopers issue 83 citations during one shift of High-Visibility Traffic Enforcement Initiative
The Maine State Police, in partnership with the Maine Turnpike Authority and the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, conducted a high-visibility traffic enforcement initiative Tuesday, August 18, 2026, to reduce crashes and fatalities through enhanced speed enforcement and increased attention to work zone safety. The campaign aims to reduce adverse driver behaviors such as following too closely, speeding, distracted driving, and aggressive driving during the busy summer travel season, with an emphasis on construction zones where workers are most vulnerable, according to Maine Department of Public Safety, in a news release.
Tuesday’s enforcement effort, which ran from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., spanned the Maine Turnpike in work zones from York to Auburn. Troopers from Troop G and the Traffic Safety Unit participated in stationary and roving enforcement details using both marked and unmarked cruisers. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety supported the initiative through highway safety grants that funded additional enforcement efforts.
Fourteen troopers contributed to the traffic safety efforts, stopping 144 total vehicles for various violations. Troopers issued 83 citations for various violations, including speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt violations, and other traffic offenses. Of the speeding violations issued, 12 were specifically for construction zone speed violations. Troopers also issued 75 warnings to promote voluntary compliance with Maine’s traffic laws and encourage safe driving habits.
"The Maine State Police thank all those who participated in the initiative to enhance work zone safety and traffic safety awareness," said MPS. "Motorists are reminded to obey posted speed limits, eliminate distractions, and use extra caution when traveling through work zones to help prevent crashes and save lives."
