CAMDEN — Susan Jean Hickey, 67, passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Maine Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. 

Susan was the daughter of Thomas and Carol Christie. She was born in Lajes, Azores on June 26, 1959, while her father was in the Navy. The family moved to California, Alaska, Hawaii, before landing in Winter Harbor, Maine, in 1966, along with 7 siblings.

Upon her father’s retirement from the Navy, the family moved to Camden in 1971, when Susan was 11 years old. She attended the Camden Rockport school system, graduating in 1977. After graduating, Susan moved to Portland and worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Maine. She met the love of her life at a party at Hickey’s camp in Lincolnville, Daniel Hickey. She officially moved to Lincolnville in 1983 and worked for Pen Bay Medical Center.

Susan and Danny married on April 25, 1987. Their son, Dr. Dustin A. Hickey, was born on May 6, 1989. Susan then dedicated her time to raising Dustin and working alongside Danny at Western Auto. 

In 1991, Susan was diagnosed with ALL (a form of Leukemia). Her brother Tom Christie Jr. was a match and she underwent a bone marrow transplant in January of 1992. She was able to live cancer-free for many years, but treatments during that time did take a toll on her overall health.

Susan enjoyed traveling with husband and family, motorcycling in the White Mountains, camping, holding babies, basketball tournaments, following the Boston Celtics, and traveling to visit her son as often as she could. Susan enjoyed breweries and good food. Their camp in Lincolnville was a haven for her and her happy place. She is a big loss to the family, and her kind heart and infectious giggle will be greatly missed by all.

She is predeceased by her sister Margaret Christie Aleman; her parents, Thomas Christie, Sr. and Carol Christie; and her father-in-law, Laurin Hickey.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Daniel Hickey; son, Dr. Dustin Hickey, his wife Eliza Carrera and grandson, Arthur Hickey; her 9 siblings, Thomas Christie Jr. (Linda), Patricia Young (Jerry), James Christie (Heather), Michael Christie (Stefanie), Teresa Rains (Dr. John), Stephen Christie (Nina), Catherine Christie (Bill), Charles Christie, Mary Berry (Ryan); her mother-in-law, Joan Hickey; sister-in-law, Melody Croes, and brother-in-law Miguel Aleman; nieces and nephews: Nick Christie, Christopher Young, James Christie, Jr., Jeremy Christie, Paige Christie, Amber Christie, Emily Christie, Jeffrey Christie, Dr. Christie Rains, Johnnie Rains, Tyler Christie, Jenna Nicolar, Ryan Christie, Cameron Christie, Hannah Christie, Blake Christie, Jack Christie, Jasmine Dennis, Caitlin Christie, Zachary Christie, Bella Christie, Mary Christie, Samuel Berry, Clover Davis, and Ben Croes; great nieces/nephews: Sawyer Shropshier, Isla Shropshier, Elijah Lee, Rainslee Lee, Gabriel Lee, Samuel Lee, Riverlee Lee, Lydia Rains, Wyatt Nicolar, Della Nicolar, Jackson Berry, Jacob Davis, Alissa Davis, Logan Davis, Mia Quarles, Marin Quarles, and Maggie Croes.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Maine Medical Center doctors, nurses and CNAs, and to her family and close friends for their overwhelming support.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Maine Cancer Foundation are welcome.

Calling hours were held Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Long Funeral Home. There will be a private burial service with family only.
