Waterfall Arts and Waldo County YMCA collaborate to launch Creative Café
BELFAST — Waterfall Arts announces a new partnership with the Waldo County YMCA, launching Creative Café, a weekly drop-in art program for adults.
Starting October 3, 2024, the program will run Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Waldo County YMCA. The sessions are free and open to the public, with no YMCA membership required. Donations are welcome.
Creative Café is designed to foster creativity in a welcoming space for everyone. This program is a fresh take on Waterfall Arts' former "Community Art Time" and "Art Hive."
The YMCA’s fully accessible facilities, including automatic doors and stair-free entry, offer an inclusive venue for all.
Russell Werkman, CEO of Waldo County YMCA, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration.
“Just as exercise and social connections do, art gives life," he said, in a news release. "Art has always been a key part of our programs for children and seniors. Partnering with Waterfall Arts to offer Creative Café here will extend those opportunities to everyone.”
A New Twist on the Art Studio
Creative Café will transform the YMCA’s Teen Room into a cozy, café-inspired art studio. Booth-style seating creates a familiar, restaurant-like, atmosphere.
Participants can select materials from an “art buffet” and choose from a “menu” of beginner-friendly projects. Gentle music, coffee, and tea will be available, encouraging a relaxed, creative environment.
Each week, the program will feature a staff-led “daily special,” introducing new materials and techniques for participants seeking more direction. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own projects to enjoy while working alongside others in this social setting.
Artmaking for Wellness
Bridget Matros, Waterfall Arts’ Outreach Manager, is passionate about integrating art into community wellness efforts. Matros highlights the growing body of research showing art’s positive effects on physical and mental health.
“Art can lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol levels, and even stave off dementia," said Matros. "It’s a customizable treatment with no side effects, and you don’t need special skills—just an openness to trying something new.”
Creating Accessibility for All
Waterfall Arts is dedicated to making art accessible to everyone. Finding an accessible space has been a priority for the organization, and the YMCA’s adaptable facilities meet this need. Creative Café’s materials and instruction are also adaptable, ensuring inclusivity for individuals with physical, intellectual, or spectrum-related disabilities. Matros, an experienced teaching artist, specializes in creative aging and adaptive arts education, maximizing the benefits of creative activities for older adults and people with diverse abilities.
Creative Café is a drop-in program, open to anyone, with no prior experience or commitment required. Whether you’re an experienced artist or simply curious to try something new, this program offers a welcoming way to connect with others and explore your creative side.
“We’re especially excited to welcome those who don’t identify as artists but are curious about giving art a try,” said Matros.
