Students invited to join the Marine Learning Project, sail on Harvey Gamage
The schooner, Harvey Gamage, will be docked at Carousel Marina, Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor on Friday, July 4 for an open house from 2 to 6 p.m. to promote the Marine Learning Project.
The Marine Learning Project, a non-profit organization that is operating Harvey Gamage this summer, is offering Maine students exposure to life on the water and on the Maine waterfront, making them aware of all of the job opportunities in the marine industry in Maine. The Marine Learning Project, in partnership with the Wiscasset School District, is running six, one-week programs, beginning on Monday, July 7, wherein students will embark onboard the vessel for a week of sailing and education around mid-coast Maine. Students, will live, sleep, eat, and sail onboard the Harvey Gamage, learning about such things as marine safety, basic seamanship, navigation, weather, and small engines, as well as life lessons of learning to work and live with others, critical thinking and problem solving. While the program is targeted to Maine middle and high school students, any student between 8th and 12th grade, regardless of where they go to school, is welcome to join the this summer for one of its week long trips.
Visitors to the open house are asked to park at the Catholic Church as parking at the marina is limited. We are inviting anyone interested in learning more about the Harvey Gamage, The Marine Learning Project, and this summer’s sessions to stop by and speak with the crew and organizers.
