Spring migration bird walk at Rockland Bog
Event Date
Friday, May 15, 2026 - 07:00 am to 09:00 amTHOMASTON — Join Georges River Land Trust and Maine Coast Heritage Trust for a birdwatching walk during spring migration at the Rockland Bog Preserve.
According to a GRLT news release, Maine's coast and forests are sometimes called a "baby bird factory," providing crucial breeding habitat for over 90 migratory bird species. In May, numerous species of warblers, flycatchers, and raptors return to Maine from their wintering locations.
Friday, May 15, from 7 - 9 a.m., naturalist Kirk Gentalen (Maine Coast Heritage Trust) and Maeve Cosgrove (Georges River Land Trust) will guide a birdwatching excursion through the Rockland Bog Preserve.
"The Rockland Bog is Midcoast Maine's largest peatland bog complex, a special ecosystem housing countless wildlife and sensitive plant species," said GRLT. "Whether you're a lifelong birder or you're looking to learn more about Maine wildlife, this walk is a great way to get to know migratory birds."
This walk is free and open to all ages. The group will meet at the new Rockland Bog Preserve trailhead on Beechwood Street. Please register at georgesriver.org to secure your spot.
Some binoculars are available to borrow during the walk. Contact maeve@grlt.org if you would like to borrow a pair.
Directions: This walk will explore the trails of the Rockland Bog Preserve from GRLT's new trailhead on Beechwood Street, in Thomaston. 389-395 Beechwood Street, in Thomaston, is the approximate location for the trailhead, according to GRLT. Follow the dirt driveway to the large parking lot at the trailhead.
