THOMASTON — "Summer evenings in Thomaston are about to get a little livelier as Thrive in Thomaston kicks off the sixth season of Music Behind the Block, a free outdoor concert series that brings neighbors together through live music and family-friendly fun," said  Thrive in Thomaston, in a news release.

 

Concerts will take place Wednesdays, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., July 22, July 29, August 5, and August 12, on the outdoor stage behind the Thomaston Municipal Building, 13 Valley Street. In the event of rain, concerts will move indoors to Watts Hall, 174 Main Street.

 

The fun begins before the music, according to Thrive. Starting at 5:30 p.m., attendees can enjoy treats from the Sugar Plums Ice Cream Trailer, lawn games, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and plenty of space for kids and adults alike to relax, play, and connect before the bands take the stage.

 

"This series has become one of the highlights of summer in Thomaston," said Community & Economic Development Coordinator Kendray Rodriguez. "Whether you come to dance, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy an evening outdoors, Music Behind the Block is all about bringing our community together. We love seeing people of all ages sharing the same space, discovering new music, and making summer memories."

 

This year's lineup offers something for every musical taste. Thrive in Thomaston provides the following descriptions:

 

The series opens on Wednesday, July 22 with Down East Dead, one of Maine's favorite Grateful Dead tribute bands. Known for faithfully recreating the spirit and energy of the legendary group, Down East Dead promises an evening of classic jams and plenty of dancing.

 

On Wednesday, July 29, 32 North takes the stage with its eclectic blend of rock, blues, Americana, original songs, and favorites ranging from the Grateful Dead to Bonnie Raitt.

 

Concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early for a special opening performance by students from Midcoast Music Academy's Gig Camp, who will perform from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

 

The series continues on Wednesday, August 5, with Polyjamorous, Midcoast Maine's improvisational rock band. Drawing inspiration from the music of the 1960s and 1970s while embracing spontaneous performances, no two Polyjamorous shows are ever the same. 

 

The August 5 concert will also serve as a benefit for Thomaston's new Community Navigator Program. The program offers free, confidential support to help Thomaston residents connect with local services and resources. Community Navigator Heather Devita works one-on-one with residents to answer questions, navigate paperwork and applications, and connect individuals and families with the support they need. Throughout the evening, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the program, meet Heather, and make donations to help support this valuable community resource.

 

The season concludes on Wednesday, August 12, with the return of crowd favorite The Sugar Snaps. This high-energy eight-piece R&B band features powerhouse vocals, a classic horn section, and an irresistible mix of funk, soul, and rhythm and blues. Their performances celebrate artists including Maceo Parker, Sharon Jones, Stevie Wonder, Ann Peebles, Al Green, The Meters, and more.

 

Admission to all Music Behind the Block concerts is free, thanks to the support of local sponsors and community partners.

 

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and settle in for an evening of music, friendship, and summer fun.
