Alwilda M. "Diddy" Maxcy, obituary
FRIENDSHIP — Alwilda M. "Diddy" Maxcy, 73, of Friendship, passed away at her home on Friday, July 10, 2026. Born on July 24, 1952, in Friendship, she was the daughter of Charles Benner, Sr. and Frances (Simmons) Benner. Diddy was raised in Friendship, attended local schools, and graduated from Medomak Valley High School with the Class of 1970.
Following high school, Diddy began a lifelong career built on hard work and dedication. She was employed by National Sea Products and Friendship Trap before finishing her career at Bath Iron Works, where she remained until her retirement.
In 1991 she met the love of her life, Joel Maxcy, and they later married in December of 2008. Together they shared many happy years, creating countless memories with family and enjoying life's simple pleasures.
To know Diddy was to know the heart of her family. She was the matriarch—the one everyone turned to for advice, comfort, encouragement, or simply a listening ear. She was kind, wise, selfless, loving, and strong-willed, always putting the needs of those she loved before her own. Whether someone needed guidance, a helping hand, or a warm meal, Diddy was always there.
She found joy in the little things that made life special. She loved playing bingo, riding on the boat and taking truck rides with Joel, four-wheeling together, family outings, cookouts, and gatherings filled with laughter. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and her homemade chocolate fudge became a treasured tradition that family and friends eagerly looked forward to every holiday season.
Above all else, Diddy cherished her family. Nothing brought her greater happiness than spending time surrounded by those she loved, watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow.
She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Joel Maxcy; her brothers, Charles Benner Jr. and Arnold Benner; her sister, Beverly Winslow and her husband Billy Winslow; and her stepson, Michael Maxcy.
Diddy leaves behind her loving daughter, Kelly Maxcy and her husband David, of Friendship; her son, Charles Barter and his wife Lori, of Friendship; her grandchildren, Kenny Barter and his wife Jasmine of Rockland, Aaron Maxcy of Friendship, Dave Maxcy Jr. of Friendship, Abigail Barter of Standish, Caleb Barter of Thomaston, Silas Barter of Friendship, Hannah Waters of Isle au Haut, and Connor Maxcy of the Warren/Thomaston area; her cherished great-grandson, Jude Mahonen of Rockland; her sister-in-law Dorothy Benner; her best friend and cousin, Norma Staples; her foster siblings Christine Starrett, George Hendron, and Wilfred Hendron; her stepdaughters, Melissa Oxner of Mississippi and Lavillda Mlynarski-Granger of Texas; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.
A celebration of Diddy's life will be held Monday, July 20, 2026, at 2 p.m., at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main Street, Waldoboro.
Diddy's unwavering love, quiet strength, generous heart, and the countless memories she created with those she loved will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
