On Friday, Sept. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m., the Jackson Memorial Library in Tenants Harbor will host the opening reception for Maine artist Kathleen Fox’s September show, "St. George People and Places," featuring paintings of fishermen of all ages in St. George, along with the places their families live and play. Light refreshments will be served.

“I only paint what is fun and interesting to me,” said Fox, in a Library news release, “so, for example, Ellie Mae, portrayed in ‘Bound by Tradition,’ is a 6th generation fisherchild bound by her family to the boats and to the sea. ‘Jimmy's House’ is left in the winter cold by the passing of our beloved former state legislator, historian, and raconteur, Jimmy Skoglund. The ‘Littlest Lobsterman,’ James, is determined to join the daunting lobstermen in Port Clyde, where the older guys end up giving him advice and watching out for him. And ‘Lobster Boys’ Dave and Lewis (who has passed away) fish the Atlantic for lobsters off Tenants Harbor on a lazy summer day sometime in the past.”

“Who can say,” continues Fox, “that Village Ice Cream is not the perfect place to find yourself on a Port Clyde summer afternoon? The four little girls in this painting are me and my three sisters, who never got to visit Village Ice Cream in real life. These are all real places and people, and all are meaningful to me and, I hope, to residents and visitors to the St, George peninsula.”

The show will be on display from Tuesday, September 1 through Wednesday, September 23.
