Frank E. Post, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Frank E. Post, 81, died peacefully at his home in Fort Myers, Florida, on Monday, January 26, 2026.
Born in Rockland, June 15, 1944, he was the son of Ralph E. and Luella Snow Post. Frank graduated from Rockland High School in 1962, where his lifelong love of sports took root; first as basketball team manager, then as a varsity player. He continued his education at Nichols College in Massachusetts, where he was a starting member of the men's basketball team.
On June 19, 1965, Frank married Bonnie Dyer in a ceremony as the first couple wed at the new Rockland Congregational Church. Two years later, they moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, for Frank's Coast Guard service. There, they helped establish a popular coffeehouse that became a welcoming gathering place for the community.
While in Alaska, Frank's athletic prowess earned him spots on the Alaskan Coast Guard basketball team, advancing to the all-star team where he competed against other military teams.
Returning to Maine, Frank immersed himself in local sports and community life. He was an active member of the Men's Rockland Rec League, where he founded the Metinic Bombers, a team Frank played on for many years and continued sponsoring for over three decades. With his brother Woody and friend Billy Leppanen, he traveled across the state watching high school basketball games. He shared his passion with younger generations by coaching Pee-Wee Basketball and Little League Baseball for his nephews' teams.
Even in retirement, sports remained central to Frank's life. He could often be found at home watching six different games simultaneously on multiple television sets, invested in each one.
A man of many talents, Frank could fix or engineer a solution to any problem. Metinic Island held a special place in his heart, where he spent every summer since birth. He meticulously documented island history, logging daily activities with his typewriter for years. These books still reside on the island and are referenced even today. This tradition began when he and Bonnie spent an entire winter alone on the island in a one-room house equipped with only an outhouse.
Frank briefly went lobstering with his brothers before becoming the Manager of Post Brothers, Inc. with his brothers, Woodbury and Ralph. Another proud moment for Frank was becoming a founding member of the Spruce Head Fishermen's Co-Op. A dedicated craftsman, he built twelve lobster boats and repaired countless others throughout his life.
In retirement, Frank and Bonnie enjoyed dining out, often with family, always seeking new culinary adventures. Whether grabbing a hot dog at Wasses, or dining at Chez Michel or Primo, Frank was always up for the adventure. Each spring, as Dorman’s Ice Cream opened for the season, Frank was often the first person in line, even being documented in a local news article. Heading South for warmer weather, Bonnie and Frank enjoyed spending winter months in both Fort Myers and Key West, Florida.
Though Frank often presented a tough exterior, he had a soft heart with deep appreciation for family traditions and time together. He loved reminiscing about Christmases spent playing Santa Claus for his nephews and the bonfires and picnics on the island.
He was as even-keeled as they come and never worried about much. Frank was extraordinarily dedicated to his family, friends, and, of course, his favorite sports teams. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Predeceased by his loving wife, Bonnie; Frank is survived by his brothers, Woodbury ‘Woody’ Post and his wife Judy of Owls Head, Ralph A. Post and his partner Nancy Eugley of Owls Head; his nephews, Larkin Post and his wife Sarah, Jacob Post and his wife Melissa Goeke, Ryan Post and his partner Cheri Savage, Jamie Levenseler and his wife Lora; his niece Becca Maltais and her husband Frank; his great-nephews, Owen Post, Calvin and Thatcher Levenseler, Carter Maltais; a sister-in-law Lucy Levenseler and her husband Jon; and his close friends, Marshall Merriam and his wife Paula, Billy Leppanen and his wife Nancy and Steve Cook and his wife Pam; as well as his neighbors and friends in Fort Myers, Garey and Pam.
Family and friends are invited to visit Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Frank will be laid to rest privately beside his wife, Bonnie.
