(Photo courtesy Kim Murphy)Get ready for a fairy tale with a twist of an ending, when Lincolnville Central School’s students present their production of Between the Lines JR., March 19, 20, and 21, at 6:30 p.m. each night.
This new musical follows Delilah McPhee (Maggie Feeney), an outsider in a new school who seeks comfort in the pages of her favorite book, where she feels heard and understood by the handsome Prince Oliver (CHRHS student Malcolm Joseph). But as the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur in both extraordinary and astonishing ways, Delilah discovers how to find her place in the real world while keeping her dreams alive.
Delilah is starting her junior year at a new school after her parents’ nasty divorce, and things only go downhill from there: she immediately makes an enemy of the school’s queen bee, Allie McAndrews (Quinn Watts), and struggles to make friends. She turns to a fairy-tale book, Between the Lines, and is shocked when the gallant Prince Oliver speaks to her. Delilah and Prince Oliver develop a real friendship, each of them struggling in their assigned stories, and must learn to live the story they want if it’s not the story they’re in.
"This story will captivate realists and dreamers alike with its compelling characters, whip-smart scenes, and songs that you’ll be humming long after the curtain closes," said a news release.
Allie McAndrews is followed by a group of friends: Ryan (Wheeler Joseph), Janice (Ariel Clausen), and Martin (Seb Rock) who taunt Delilah. Delilah’s friend, Jules (Vivienne Acciavatti) is by her side as well as the Librarian, Ms. Winx (Emmy Neault).
The high school ensemble includes a variety of characters playing multiple roles, including Benjamin Holden and Hazel Yandell. Delilah struggles in her junior year and has a devastating time in chemistry class, headed up by the chemistry teacher Mrs. Brown (Kalen Dunn). Delilah tries to talk to her mom, Grace McPhee (Indra O’Donnell) but has a hard time communicating, and so she turns to a fairy tale book. In the fairy tale book, she meets Prince Oliver, Rapskullio (Silas Beach), Queen Maureen (Willow Watts), Frump (Tilly Harbaugh), Troll (Ocean Winterheart), Princess Seraphima (Olivia Poulette), Lady-in-Waiting (Grace Ray), Butterflies (Elliott Mitchell, Scotia Towne, Eva Wagner, Blair Pollock), Fairy Tale characters (Kris Curtis, Oliver Dodge, Oskar Taylor, Sloan Whitehouse), and six Mermaids (Liesl Gentry, Evie Kramer, Paige McClellan, Saylor Rolerson, Paisley Stringer, Sylvia Talty).
"At the end of the story, Delilah turns to the author of the fairy tale, Jessamyn Jacobs (Pepper Kelley), to try to figure out a plan, and that is where there is a dramatic twist to the whole fairy tale," said the release.
Between the Lines JR. is based on the novel by international bestselling author Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer and features a book co-written by Jodi Picoult and Timothy Allen McDonald (Jim Henson’s Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas) and music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson (Apple TV+’s “Central Park”), in their New York theatre debuts.
