Darryl E. Sanborn, Sr., obituary
THOMASTON — It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Darryl E. Sanborn, Sr. on April 17, 2026. Born in Camden, May 31, 1961, he was the son of David and Joan Smith Sanborn.
Darryl attended school in Warren as a young child and later moved to Thomaston, where he continued his education and graduated from Georges Valley High School.
Following graduation, Darryl couldn’t wait to travel. He landed a job as a photographer for Parkway Studios, which allowed him to visit every contiguous state. He always spoke highly of his time traveling the country with his trusty sidekick, his English Springer Spaniel, Zeke. Later Darryl worked for a brief time at Country Kitchen. Marriage to Julie Cross followed, during which they had 4 children, Darryl Jr., Anna, Justin, and Nicholas. He loved his children deeply and had special connections with each of them.
Darryl loved taking his family on vacations and exploring new and familiar places together. He enjoyed the outdoors, spending time walking his property, fishing, kayaking and reading. He was just as enthusiastic about sharing his love of science fiction with them, including trips to Star Trek conventions. Some of his favorites include Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Doctor Who.
One of Darryl’s favorite work memories was from his time at Weatherend Estate Furniture, when President George H. W. Bush and his wife, Barbara Bush, arrived with a full motorcade.
Darryl spent many years of his career working for MBNA and then Bank of America, including time at the Rockland, Camden and Belfast branches. He retired from Bank of America in 2012 to co-own and operate Dorman’s Dairy Dream. Throughout his life, he served on the school boards of Pen Bay Christian School and RSU 13, taught Sunday School, and was a deacon at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church. He always spoke with pride about his time in these roles.
Darryl was predeceased by his grandparents and several uncles.
