'Eight by 12' exhibition opens May 1 at Steelhouse in Rockland
Event Date
Friday, May 01, 2026 - 04:00 pm to 07:00 pmRockland-based artist Bruce Weis, 84, will present a new collection of pencil drawings titled "Eight by 12," on view from May 1 through May 31, 2026, at Steelhouse (639 Main Street, Rockland). The exhibition opens on Friday, May 1 as part of Rockland’s monthly First Friday Art Walk.
According to Steelhouse, in a news release, Weis is known for his detailed pencil drawings of wildlife and coastal landscapes, many inspired by his surroundings in Midcoast Maine. His work captures the textures and movement of the natural world—from the Rockland breakwater and working boatyards to the birds that inhabit the region.
After a decades-long career as an engineer and project manager at Cargill and Bühler, Weis returned to drawing at age 79, encouraged by one of his daughters. He has since developed a distinctive style rooted in graphite, often working exclusively in black and white to accommodate his colorblindness. This constraint has become a defining strength, allowing him to focus on intricate line work and tonal variation to depict crashing waves, jagged rocks, feathers, and fur.
Weis’s artistic journey has included coursework at the Farnsworth Art Museum, and his early work explored lighthouses across the United States. His recent pieces increasingly center on wildlife, particularly birds native to the Maine coast.
The opening reception will take place on May 1, from 4 - 7 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through May 31.
