THOMASTON — Douglas Leonard Powell, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Breakwater Commons in Rockland, just a few days after celebrating his 91st birthday with family. An avid fisherman, he left this world aptly during the ebb tide.

Doug was born in Rockland on August 23, 1935. He was the son of Robert (Bob) Powell and Arvilla Allen (Hill) Powell. Being one of nine children, his family lived in several locations throughout Rockland as well as Pleasant Island.

Doug spent his early years working as a carpenter and commercial fisherman on various boats in the Francis O’Hara fleet in Rockland. He later owned Doug’s Ice Cream, Powell’s Pick-Up and renovated homes with his wife of fifty-three years, Faye (Seekins) Powell,  before their divorce. He worked as a sternman on lobster boats until the age of 78. If you knew Doug, you heard all his fishing stories, maybe more than once. Most Sunday mornings, you could find Doug and his son Steve at Rockport Diner or Rockland American Legion Hall having breakfast.

Always beating the odds, he had several close calls in his life, nearly blown up in a gas explosion as a teenager, washed overboard in the boat while commercial fishing in the Grand Banks, replaced on a fishing boat that later sank with no survivors, getting a hand caught up and injured in a boat winch, a bout with Guillain Barré syndrome and a triple bypass for his heart. It was a feat for Doug to live as many years as he did, and he was grateful to have all the life he had.

He was predeceased by his sister Helen Wall; brothers Robert (Bud) Powell, Walter Powell, Henry (Towser) Powell, and Maurice (John) Powell.

Doug is survived by his sons, Steven Powell his wife Linda, Bruce Powell; his sisters Beulah Tweedie, Arvilla Collins and her husband Mike; brother Patrick Powell and his wife Marie; grandchildren, Amanda Powell and Alex Powell; along with several nieces and nephews.

The Powell family wants to thank the staff at Breakwater Commons for all their exceptional support and compassionate care.

A private service will be held at a later date with Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.
