College of the Atlantic director helps identify Marine Studies' collection of whale bones
Belfast Marine Institute students in Genna Black and Chip Lagerbom's Marine Studies class recently met with College of the Atlantic's Dan DenDanto, Allied Whale Associate and DIrector of the Fin Whale Catalogue. He travelled to Belfast Area High School to see the Institute's collection of bones from the Minke whale that washed ashore in Belfast two summers ago.
BMI has been collecting the bones from where the carcass was moored and has now recovered over 75% of the 21-foot female Minke's skeleton. DenDanto helped identify the various bones recovered and their proper place in the skeletal structure. He then spoke about cleaning, preservation and re-articulation of the bones, which will be the next steps taken.
The BMI will be working on this long term project as part of their initiative The Floating Classroom designed to get young adults out, in, on, around and under the waters of Penobscot Bay and potential careers and educational opportunities in the marine world.
