'No Kings' demonstrators gather in Belfast
On an absolutely gorgeous Saturday afternoon in October, over 1200 local residents showed up at Steamboat Landing Park, filling the field with colorful costumes, flags, and so many creative signs.
Engaging in the most American of political activities, peaceful protest, the vibe was positive and jovial, even if the slogans could be somewhat vicious in their criticism of the current administration. In contrast to some of the rhetoric being put out prior to the day of protest, there were many exhibitions of patriotism, with American flags in abundance — though some were flown upside down, in the old naval tradition of signalling distress.
The organization Waldo County Indivisible provided numerous volunteers in fluorescent vests, serving as marshals, medics, and peacekeepers — peacekeepers being specifically trained in deescalation techniques, though I did not witness any need for their services, it is important to be prepared.
Our right to peaceful assembly is fundamental, and on fully display this weekend in Belfast.
