Sunday Tidbit: Spiritual Direction
Sometimes we are redirected by the Holy Spirit, which leads us onto a new path. As a biblical example, while Paul was traveling with his companions, the Holy Spirit prevented them from preaching in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey). Paul then had a vision to go and minister in Macedonia (Acts 16:6-9). The Holy Spirit’s redirection and guidance enabled Paul to establish key churches that became major centers for early Christian growth.
Just as it was in Paul’s day, it remains today. The Holy Spirit is given to lead and guide us, not only to direct us to the truth but also to give guidance in everyday matters (Romans 8:14). God once spoke to me audibly, instructing me to leave California, where I worked as a pilot, and move to Maine, where I now live. While God may not always communicate with us through visions or an audible voice, He does so in many diverse and creative ways, including through our thoughts, hearts, emotions, minds, spirits, and Scripture.
Through His intervention, I once avoided a potential tragedy. I was driving on a California highway when I had a sense that something bad was about to happen. I tried to dismiss it. I told myself, “I am not giving in to fear, for fear does not steer my path; God’s peace does. Little did I realize that this was a warning from the Holy Spirit, which only grew more intense.
Suddenly, I had a vision. I saw my car being hit by two vehicles, one on each side. Trapped in the middle, I saw myself being crushed. “OK,” I thought, “That’s it!” I took the next exit and left the freeway. I parked the car and waited. Soon, the feeling passed. Feeling okay, I drove back onto the highway. Immediately, I saw a vehicle on the side of the road that had just been in an accident. I knew that if I hadn’t pulled over, I would have been involved.
Since then, I have paid attention to this “warning” that appears in the center of my stomach. Many times, as I have noticed this particular impression, I have changed my course, only to realize I had avoided a trap or something harmful once again.
Being redirected by the Spirit can happen in various ways. I was working on a project when I became distracted. Later, I felt a tap on my right shoulder, like someone’s hand trying to get my attention. I turned to look, but no one was there. I then realized I hadn’t finished printing out the material for my accountant; he needed it that day.
Sometimes I feel the need to stop for no reason. I then stop and ask myself, “Why?” Like the time I was about to leave the airport when I suddenly felt prompted to stop. I remembered I had left my travel bag behind. Usually, when this happens, it’s because I forget something.
I know I need all the help I can get. It’s nice to have a friend like Jesus, who leads us by His Spirit, walks with us, and redirects our path in times of need. This, too, is His saving grace.
In His heart and love;
