Searsmont man identified as driver involved in fatal Newburgh crash
A Searsmont resident has been identified as the deceased person following fatal traffic crash that occured in Newburgh on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
At approximately 11:55 a.m., the Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a report of a serious traffic crash on Route 69, near the Route 202 intersection in Newburgh. When deputies arrived on scene, they found a 2014 Porsche sedan and a 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer truck had struck head-on.
The driver of the sports sedan was identified as Peter Williams, 66, of Searsmont. Williams was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. His dog was transported to a local veterinarian, but died during the transport. The driver of the tractor trailer truck was identified as Aaron Flagg, 43, of Albion. Flagg was assessed for injuries, but not transported.
According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, preliminary reports indicated that the Porsche was traveling west when it crossed the centerline on a curve in the road. Shortly thereafter, it collided head-on with the tractor trailer, which was loaded with junk metal. The tractor-trailer left the roadway, striking a garage and yard, which received extensive damage.
"While the investigation remains active, deputies were able to locate a video from one of the vehicles involved, confirming the sports sedan crossed over into the path of the truck," said the PCSO.
The investigation into the crash was conducted by deputies from the Sheriff's Office, who were supported by the Sheriff’s Office reconstruction specialists and a drone team. Additionally, the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit assisted with the commercial vehicle inspection.
The Newburgh and Carmel Fire Departments, along with the Maine Department of Transportation, also contributed to the response efforts.
