New Hope Midcoast invites the public to our free annual Speaker Series featuring Margaret Groban. Groban will speak from 4-5:30 p.m. on September 29 in Rockland and on September 30 in Boothbay Harbor.

A federal prosecutor in Maine and former member of Maine’s Domestic Violence Homicide Review Panel, Margaret Groban’s expertise offers our communities the chance to hear more about this important topic.Groban currently serves as an adjunct faculty at the University of Maine School of Law where she teaches a course on the Second Amendment and the Regulation of Firearms. She will provide an historical review of the federal response to domestic violence, an explanation of the kinds of federal laws that extend to guide state responses to domestic abuse and firearm restrictions, and the impact that these laws have had.

This timely presentation and discussion will occur just prior to the red flag referendum that will be on the Maine November ballot. Red Flag or Extreme Risk laws allow law enforcement, loved ones, and others to petition the court for removal of firearms from individuals posing a risk to themselves or others. The referendum will impact victims of domestic abuse as well as affected others in their efforts to keep dangerous people from possessing firearms.

New Hope Midcoast brings expert speakers to our local communities to discuss topics that intersect with domestic abuse, and to promote community awareness, discussion, and interaction. Click here for more information and to register for this free event. We look forward to seeing you.
