Free gravel road maintenance workshop, Aug. 26
Gravel Road Maintenance Workshop will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., with a morning session at Unity Community Center, 32 School St., Unity, and an afternoon site visit at Waterman Lane in Burnham.
This free training, hosted by Waldo County Soil and Water Conservation District & Friends of Lake Winnecook, is ideal for landowners, contractors, town officials, watershed groups, and anyone else interested in improving road resilience and protecting nearby lakes and streams.
"Gravel roads are essential for seasonal and year-round access to homes, camps, and natural areas across Maine," said Waldo County Soil and Water Conservation District. "If not properly maintained, they can lead to challenges for landowners—they can also contribute to erosion and water quality problems. Join us for a hands-on workshop focused on how to evaluate and maintain gravel roads with water quality and long-term performance in mind."
The morning session will cover Gravel Roads 101—introducing the fundamentals of road construction and maintenance, strategies to minimize water quality impacts, and available technical resources, among other key topics.
In the afternoon, the group heads to a nearby gravel road to assess conditions in the field and discuss real-world solutions.
Rain date is Wednesday, August 27.
