Woman struck by car in Owls Head; Rockland EMS twice sent to Breakwater
OWLS HEAD and ROCKLAND — In the course of three hours, Tuesday, Sept. 16, Rockland EMS was called to two medical issues on the Breakwater. While still on scene for the second Breakwater trip, a decision was made to request mutual aid for a motor vehicle incident in Owls Head.
Ingraham Drive, in Owls Head, was closed to traffic briefly, Tuesday, Sept. 16, after a woman walking across Ingraham Drive to her mailbox was struck by a vehicle, just prior to 4:30 p.m. The location, 22 Ingraham Drive, was the scene of another motor vehicle crash that occured in July 2022.
According to a neighbor who heard today's crash and went to check on the woman, the vehicle was in the process of pulling out of Brooks Way, a side street opposite the Ingraham Drive house.
"Everything happened so fast," said the neighbor, who also spoke of the fact that crashes and incidents are common on that stretch.
Knox County Sheriff's Office, Owls Head Fire Dept., and South Thomaston Ambulance responded to the scene. When a request for a paramedic was issued, the St. George ambulance, which happened to be returning from Pen Bay Medical Center, stopped by to offer assistance. However, a Rockland paramedic happened to also be available and got to the scene just prior to St. George. Rockland EMS usually covers Owls Head. However, at the time of the call, Rockland EMS personnel were on the Breakwater responding to their second Breakwater medical emergency of the day.
At approximately 1 p.m., a 70 year old male fell just shy of the lighthouse structure and was unable to walk back to the parking lot. Rockland EMS hopped into the Harbor Master's boat at the Public Landing and motored directly to the lighthouse. They returned with the patient approximately 20-30 minutes later.
Just prior to 4 p.m., EMS was notified of a 79 year old male who fell and hit his head; breathing was noted by the caller as irregular. This time, with the patient being approximately one third of the way along the Breakwater, crews drove to Breakwater Park and walked to him.
