Thomaston Green used as LifeFlight landing zone for Oyster River Road motor vehicle crash
THOMASTON — LifeFlight of Maine landed at the Thomaston Green, Wednesday morning, to transport a person who’d been involved in a one-vehicle crash on Oyster River Road.
At approximately 9 a.m., Sept. 10, local emergency crews were alerted to the crash near 1453 Oyster River Road, in Warren, involving a single vehicle. To assist with the incident, both Warren and Thomaston fire departments were called for both closing the road on the Warren side, and for extrication of the patient at the scene. Thomaston PD had an officer at the Route 1 Thomaston entrance to detour all incoming traffic, while another TPD officer went to the scene directly. That officer was then joined by Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Once the decision was made to request the transport helicopter, additional TFD units set up a landing zone on the soccer fields at the Thomaston Green, also known as the former prison. Waldoboro and Thomaston EMS agencies responded. Warren Ambulance was on another call when this incident was reported. Oyster River Towing hauled the vehicle away.
Based on tire marks, damaged vegetation, and the vehicle itself, preliminary observation at the scene of the crash leads investigators to question speed as the driver/single occupant crested a hill, drifted off the road on his eastbound lane, crossed the center line, hit an embankment, continued up the embankment (likely airborne, according to deputies on scene), and then rolled back down into the ditch and continued to roll to the final location in the eastbound lane. Along with assisting the driver, responding firefighters also checked the area to ensure that no other occupants had been in the vehicle.
The patient, who was not wearing a seatbelt according to deputies, was extricated and transported to the Thomaston Green by Thomaston EMS.
Oyster River Road reopened sometime between 10:15 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. The LifeFlight helicopter ascended from the soccer fields at approximate 10:35 a.m.
