Schooners down Riverhawks in middle school girls, boys soccer

WALDOBORO — The Medomak and Camden-Rockport eighth grade soccer teams met Wednesday, Sept. 11 in Waldoboro.

In both instances, the visiting Schooners were able to topple the host Riverhawks. 

Girls Soccer: Camden-Rockport 4, Medomak 1

Britta Denny opened the scoring for Camden-Rockport on a penalty kick to give the Schooners a 1-0 advantage with about five minutes off the clock. 

With nearly 20 minutes off the clock, Brenna Mackey found the back of the net to extend the Schooners’ lead to 2-0. 

Two minutes later, Denny scored when her long corner kick deflected off a Riverhawk defender and slipped into the goalie net. 

Before the opening half concluded, Kytana Williamson scored Medomak’s lone goal on a follow-up play after her initial shot bounced off the goalkeeper. 

Camden-Rockport scored its fourth and final goal in the second half with about three minutes remaining in the game. Lea Zwecker found the back of the net for the Schooners. 

Medomak coach Andrea Williamson praised her team’s goalkeeper, Erica Waite, for tremendous play in the goalie net, especially as Waite took a ball to the face and got kicked in the face. 

The Riverhawk coach also praised Sara Nelson, Haley Puchalski and Madison Boynton for their defensive play. 

Boys Soccer: Camden-Rockport 8, Medomak 0

On defense Seamus Donaghy, Will Rush, Issac Swain and Finn Kelly put out solid defensive performances.

Helping back on defense Zan Nyguen and Slavick Moody showed great effort playing both sides of the ball.

Offensively, Medomak was able to get some shots on goal with the best attempt coming from Vischal Mellor, who hit the crossbar in the first half.

Adding to the Medomak offense was Kolby Staples, Nevan Power and Atticus Blue.

In net for Medomak was Kael Sidelinger who had 19 saves against a very prolific Camden offense.

“[Medomak] worked hard the whole game and didn’t back down until the game was over,” said Medomak coach Jackson Fortin.
