NORTH HAVEN – North Haven Community School has opened admissions for the 2026-27 Offshore Program cohort. Students entering grades 9-12 are invited to apply to join students at Maine’s smallest K-12 public school for a balance of rigorous academics, community connection, and interest-driven projects, set against the backdrop of North Haven’s vibrant working waterfront, according to a news release from school.

Applicants can consider attending for a single year, in what Principal Dr. Shaun Johnson described as a “domestic study away” experience, or for multiple years of matriculation. High school students at North Haven Community School complete a credit-bearing program of study aligned to Maine’s Learning Results, while using a personal learning plan to design courses and experiences aligned with their passions and interests.

The high school program at North Haven Community School can include extended learning opportunities with community partners such as farms, tradespeople, boatbuilders, and town organizations; interest-driven research projects; scientific exploration alongside Hurricane Island research staff; urban and wilderness expeditions; varsity athletics; and abundant visual and performing arts opportunities.

Each student at North Haven Community School truly makes a difference in their school and in the community, and benefits from small class sizes and close connections with teachers, said the release.

Class of 2025 graduate Maya LaBelle, who attended North Haven Community School through the Offshore Program for two years, said it, “expanded what I thought was possible for me in my life and opened up a world of opportunities for me. It rekindled my love of learning and gaining knowledge that I’m happily continuing my learning journey at Eckerd College…my confidence in my own abilities grew immensely because I was in environments set up for my success.”

Students enrolled in the Offshore Program are housed together with a supervising adult in a residence two miles from the school campus. Tuition, room, and board are included in the program’s $20,000 annual cost, which may be covered through sending school funds in eligible districts. Need-based financial aid is available.
