More Than a Festival: Maine Lobster Festival Gives Back Year-Round

ROCKLAND, Maine — For generations, the Maine Lobster Festival has been known as one of the state's premier summer traditions, bringing together tens of thousands of visitors to celebrate Maine's iconic lobster industry. But behind the five days of food, entertainment and family fun is a mission that continues long after the Festival gates close.
The Maine Lobster Festival is a nonprofit organization, but even more than that, it is a year-round fundraiser dedicated to supporting Midcoast Maine. While the Festival itself takes place over five days each summer, volunteers work throughout the year to organize the event and invest proceeds back into the community through donations, scholarships, awards and local partnerships.
Over the past 10 years alone, the Maine Lobster Festival has contributed more than $230,000 in donations, scholarships and awards, supporting more than 110 organizations and individuals throughout the region. In addition, each Festival provides opportunities for more than 100 small business vendors to showcase and sell their products, helping strengthen Maine's local economy.
"The Maine Lobster Festival has always been about more than hosting a great event," said MLF President Celia Knight. "Everything we do is rooted in giving back to our community. Every lobster enjoyed and every hour volunteered helps support organizations, students and initiatives that make Midcoast Maine stronger."
The Festival's economic impact extends well beyond the waterfront in Rockland. Hotels, inns, restaurants, retailers and attractions throughout Midcoast Maine consistently report the Festival as one of the busiest periods of their year. Visitors travel from across the country and around the world, generating millions of tourism dollars for communities stretching from Belfast to Damariscotta.
As the organization looks ahead, the Maine Lobster Festival is expanding its commitment to community giving. For 2026, the Festival has established a goal of $20,000 in community support, with $15,000 going toward benefactions to local organizations and $5,000 to scholarships and awards recognizing students and community members.
"Our success is measured not only by attendance and the memories that we help our guests make, but by what we're able to give back," said MLF Director Shannon Kinney. "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attends the Festival, volunteers their time, sponsors our event or supports our mission. We are proud to be a fundraiser that works so hard to make a difference in our local community. Together, we're celebrating Maine's lobster industry while creating meaningful opportunities for our neighbors and investing in the future of our communities."
The Maine Lobster Festival remains one of the state's largest volunteer-run events, with 1,000+ volunteers dedicating countless hours each year to ensure the Festival continues to benefit both the lobster industry and the people who call Midcoast Maine home.
As visitors gather this summer to enjoy fresh Maine lobster, live entertainment, family activities and waterfront traditions, they are also helping make a lasting difference throughout the region.
