Pianist Michael Stephen Brown opens Bay Chamber’s 65th season

Pianist Michael Stephen Brown, the winner of Bay Chamber’s 2026 Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award, will open the season with three concerts, beginning with the Opening Night Gala: Andrew Wolf Memorial Concert on Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m. Brown will be joined by acclaimed violinist Stephen Jackiw, in a program of Clara Shumann, Ives, and Brahms’ final Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor.
On Friday, July 24, at 5:30 p.m., Brown is joined by award-winning cellist Nicholas Canellakis, "widely admired for the richness of his sound and the unmistakable personality he brings to the stage," said Bay Chamber, in a news release. "The program features Debussy’s ravishing Beau Soir and Brahms’ beloved Sonata No. 2 in F Major." The evening concludes with Nicholas’s virtuosic arrangement of Don Ellis's Bulgarian Bulge.
On Friday, July 24, at 8 p.m., Jackiw, Canellakis, and Brown come together for an evening devoted to the piano trio. "Haydn’s celebrated Piano Trio No. 39 in G Major, sparkles with humor and flair," said Bay Chamber. "Two works by Brown follow, offering a glimpse into the imagination of a composer-performer whose music blends sensitivity with flashes of mercurial brilliance. The evening culminates in Mendelssohn’s magnificent D minor piano trio."
