Margaret Archer, obituary
CUSHING — Margaret "Gram" Archer, 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Born in South Thomaston on April 28, 1935, she was the daughter of Samuel and Lillian Ward Heino. She grew up in the West Rockport area, where she attended local schools.
A hard worker throughout her life, Margaret began her career at O'Hara's, working alongside her mother, who was known as the fastest fish cutter in Rockland, a legacy of determination that Margaret carried with her always.
On April 27, 1963, she married Edward Archer, and together they made their home in Thomaston for most of their married life. Margaret was a beloved fixture in town, known for always being out walking and her warm habit of stopping at the post office to say hi. Her smiling face and cheerful wave were a welcome sight to all who crossed her path.
In her later years, Margaret found joy in making beautiful puzzles and coloring with her grandchildren each of whom she taught. Nothing brought her greater happiness than time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When the little ones were young, she never missed the chance to greet them as they stepped off the school bus, always with a home-cooked meal of steak and potatoes waiting, and a homemade cake with frosting and sprinkles. She loved children and babies with her whole heart and carried a quiet grief since the passing of her beloved son, Billy, in 2015.
Margaret was spunky and full of sparkle, with a well-known love of the color pink. She was delighted to sit by the window and watch the wildlife outside, especially the squirrels and birds that visited. She even cherished her babydoll, who never left her side and named it after a great-grandchild, Lincoln, whom she adored. She will be deeply and dearly missed by all who had the joy of knowing and loving her.
Predeceased by her husband, Edward C. Archer; her son William D. Archer; two brothers, George Heino and Arnold Heino, and a nephew, George Heino, Jr.; Gram is survived by her children Rhonda Smith and her husband Michael, Edward S. Archer all of Cushing; and her grandchildren, April Benedix and her husband Kaden, Rose Harper and her husband Jacob all of Cushing; Alex Mansfield and Jesse Mansfield both of Rockland, Alana and Jordan; as well as her great-grandchildren, Michaela Meklin and her husband Isaiah; her fur-great-grandbabies, ‘Duke’ the St. Bernard and the newest edition ‘Daisey’, Lillian Benedix, Lincoln Harper, Hallie Haper, Benjamin Harper, Georgianna and Brey.
A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 3 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Gram will be laid to rest privately in the spring.
