Writer and boatbuilder to speak about New England’s great trees
Event Date
Tuesday, April 21, 2026 - 12:00 pmAt noon on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, writer, boatbuilder, and outdoor enthusiast Kevin Martin will speak in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library about the biggest trees in Maine and New England. This talk, sponsored by the Belfast Garden Club, is free and open to the public. All are invited to attend the tree-measuring walk and demonstration that will take place at 3:30 p.m.
Martin will discuss how he got involved with finding the trees, how lumber from similar trees is used in his boatbuilding work, and how wildlife will use these impressive parts of our landscape, according to Belfast Garden Club, in a news release. The discussion will cover trees on public land in the region, and where they are located so you can go see them for yourself. He will also suggest some city tours and highlight some trees local to the Midcoast Maine area.
Writer and outdoor enthusiast Kevin Martin has been a woodworker and wooden boat builder for over forty years, served on his town’s Conservation Commission, was chair of the Lamprey River Advisory Committee and the New Hampshire Big Tree Program. He produced an earlier book, Big Trees of New Hampshire and published Big Trees of Northern New England in hopes that others will also appreciate the trees and forests of the region.
Martin’s lecture will be the final talk in the Belfast Garden Club’s winter/spring programs. Talks will resume in September, when Ethan Hughes of the Possibility Alliance will discuss permaculture for the home garden.
