Maine State Police Troop D beat: lingering at McDonalds, the scent of marijuana, stolen rings

    AUGUSTA — Maine State Police Troop D reported the following activity March 9-23. Troop D is responsible for Maine's Midcoast, including Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Waldo, and Knox counties, the southern half of Kennebec County and part of northern Cumberland County. The troop also patrols Interstate 295, from Brunswick to Gardiner. The troop's complement includes a lieutenant, three sergeants, 25 troopers and a secretary. An arrest or summons does not imply guilt.

    March 9

    Trooper James Macdonald stopped a vehicle on I-295 after running the license plate of the vehicle and discovering the owner had an expired license. Elise Faris, 30, was charged with operating a motor vehicle with an expired license greater than 90 days.

    March 10

    Trooper Desiree Wuthenow took a report from a complainant of theft from his vehicles. Investigation continues.

    Trooper Christopher Rogers stopped William Payne, 33, on Hallowell-Litchfield Road in West Gardiner for failure to stop at a stop sign. The odor of marijuana was detected and a subsequent search revealed various paraphernalia items. Payne was summonsed for the offense.

    Trooper Kyle Pelletier investigated an identity theft complaint in Farmingdale.

    March 11

    Trooper Pelletier investigated a burglary in Litchfield. The complainant reported that her house was unlawfully accessed and two of her rings were stolen. The investigation continues.

    Trooper Eric Verhille stopped a vehicle on Route 1 in West Bath and smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Passenger Shannon Barter, 19, of Boothbay was in possession of paraphernalia and a usable amount of marijuana. She was issued summonses for the offenses.

    Trooper Benjamin Sweeney initiated a traffic stop on Route 137 in Knox for an expired inspection sticker. Stephen Smith, 26, of Unity, admitted to Trooper Sweeney that the registration plates were illegally attached. Trooper Sweeney charged Smith with the offense and the vehicle was towed.

    Trooper Niles Krech stopped a vehicle with no tail lights near the Troop D barracks in Augusta. Trooper Krech discovered that passenger Nicole Truman, 31, had a warrant for her arrest. During a search of the vehicle Trooper Krech found heroin inside Truman's wallet. Truman was arrested for the warrant and charged with unlawful possession of a schedule W drug (heroin) and sale and use of drug paraphernalia.

    Trooper Rogers stopped Bethany Bernier, 19, on Route 1 in Brunswick for criminal speeding. Trooper Verhille also responded and his K-9 indicated narcotics in the vehicle. A subsequent search of passenger Tyler Peavey, 26, revealed a marijuana pipe hidden in his boot. He was summonsed for the paraphernalia and Bernier was issued a summons for criminal speed.

    Trooper Seth Allen took a report of copper theft from a home in Litchfield. No forced entry was made and a list of suspects is being compiled. Investigation continues.

    March 12

    Trooper Allen summonsed Colin Fergusson, 34, of Hallowell, for sale and use of drug paraphernalia after a search of Fergusson's person and vehicle resulted in the discovery of a marijuana pipe. Fergusson was initially stopped on Route 201 for expired registration.

    March 13

    Trooper Sweeney initiated a traffic stop on Route 141 in Belfast. Norma Philbrook, 43, of Swanville, was under suspension for failure to pay fines. Philbrook was issued summonses for operating after suspension and failure to register motor vehicle.

    Trooper Rogers stopped Lisa Colby, 43, on High Street in West Gardiner for a defective vehicle. Investigation revealed her license was under suspension and the vehicle was not insured. She was summonsed for operating after suspension.

    March 14

    Trooper Rogers received a harassment complaint from s complainant in West Gardiner. The subject of the complaint was contacted and warned for his conduct.

    Trooper Sweeney initiated a traffic stop in Searsmont. Michael Gushee, 43, of Searsmont, was issued a summons for operating after suspension.

    March 15

    Trooper Pelletier assisted the Gardiner Police Department in removing a male subject from McDonald's in Gardiner. According to the management on shift, the male was lingering within the restaurant for more than two hours and eventually fell asleep in one of the booths. He was ordered to leave without any incident.

    Trooper Macdonald stopped a vehicle on Bangor Street in Augusta for having a plate light out. Investigation revealed Michelle Bard, 42, had an expired license. Bard was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle with an expired license greater than 90 days.

    Trooper Wuthenow responded to a 9-1-1 misdial in Liberty.

    Trooper Verhille stopped April Austin, 27, of Augusta, along I-295 in Richmond. Further investigation revealed she had attached false plates to the vehicle she was operating. Austin was issued a summons for the offense.

    Trooper Ferreira stopped a vehicle on Maine Avenue in Farmingdale for following too closely. The operator was warned for the infraction.

    March 16

    Trooper Verhille stopped Jordan Barnes, 28, of Augusta, on State Street in Augusta. Barnes was ultimately arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol.

    Trooper James Leonard intercepted a black Toyota Camry in Bowdoinham which was the subject of two separate traffic complaints, one at mile 11 and another at mile 28. Emily Pelletier, 38, was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol.

    Trooper Thomas Bureau stopped Robert J. Skillings, 33, on Fenwick Drive in Belmont for a speed violation on Route 3. Skillings was ultimately charged with operating under the influence of alcohol.

    Trooper Allen responded to Albion for the late report of an assault. Following investigation, Calvin Lewis, 56, was issued a summons.

    Trooper Macdonald stopped a vehicle on Route 3 in Augusta for having expired registration stickers. Joel Lewis, 41, was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration more than 150 days.

    March 17

    Trooper Leonard stopped Christopher Carrier, 29, on I-295 in Richmond for a vehicle defect. During the course of the stop Carrier turned over a marijuana pipe and plastic bag containing a small amount of marijuana. He was issued summonses for the offenses.

    Trooper Bureau stopped Brenda Varney, 45, on School Street in Unity for a passenger who was not wearing his seat belt. Upon further investigation Trooper Bureau discovered the plates on the vehicle were falsely attached. Varney was issued a summons for attaching false plates.

    Trooper Allen stopped Jason Rocque, 36, of Chelsea, on Route 32 in Windsor for displaying an expired registration. At the time of the stop Rocque's registration was expired by more than 150 days and he was issued a summons for the offense.

    Trooper Corey Smith checked the welfare of a resident of Unity upon the request of the Department of Health and Human Services. No problems were found.

    Troopers Smith, Sweeney, LaCoste, and Sergeant Jeffrey Mills responded to Unity for a reported assault. No evidence to support the report was found and the parties separated for the night.

    March 18

    Trooper Smith stopped a vehicle for defective exhaust on Main Street in Unity. The passenger, Christopher Caldwell, 24, of Albion, was found to have outstanding warrants from Newport District Court. Trooper Smith arrested Caldwell and transported him to Waldo County Jail.

    Trooper Leonard stopped Riley McKenna, 28, on I-295 in Bowdoinham for a vehicle defect. A vehicle search was conducted per McKenna's bail conditions. During the search a marijuana pipe was located and McKenna was issued a summons for the offense.

    Trooper Sweeney stopped a vehicle on the Bagley Hill Road in Troy for a traffic violation. Following investigation, Joseph Klekotta, 29, of Dixmont, was issued summonses for failure to register vehicle greater than 150 days, illegal attachment of a registration sticker and failure to provide proof of insurance. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

    Trooper Ball responded to a hit and run in Pittston in front of the IGA. The complainant reported making a left hand turn into the parking lot when a vehicle passed her on the left and made contact with her vehicle. A crash report was completed.

    Trooper Robinson was called to Edwards Shop N' Save on Plaza Drive in Unity for a reported shoplifter. Julie Rich, 45, of Burnham allegedly admitted trying to steal items. Charges are pending.

    Trooper Bureau stopped Kari Williams, 31, on Route 137 in Albion for not having a front license plate. Trooper Bureau detected the odor of marijuana and a strong odor of perfume as well. Following investigation, Williams was issued summonses for sale and use of drug paraphernalia and possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

    March 19

    Trooper Wuthenow received a complaint of harassment on Purple Heart Highway in Brooks. The complainant wanted to report continuing harassment from an assault that took place in Dec.2013, from Bert Noble, 44. Noble was served with a cease harassment order as well as a no-trespass notice by Trooper Rogers at Two Bridges Jail.

    Trooper Macdonald received a shoplifting complaint from Hannaford in China. Following investigation, Wayne Thompson, 50, of Windsor, was issued summonses on two counts of theft and was issued a criminal trespass notice for the China Hannaford.

    March 20

    Trooper Macdonald stopped a vehicle on South Freedom Road in Albion for failing to dim its high beams. Trooper Macdonald detected the odor of marijuana and upon searching the vehicle located drug paraphernalia and marijuana. The vehicle registration was also expired. The male juvenile was issued summonses for sale and use of drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration greater than 150 days. His male juvenile passenger was issued a summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

    Trooper Rogers stopped Devin Trull, 21, on Town Farm in Unity for speeding. There were open containers of alcohol in the vehicle and Trull was on bail conditions not to use or possess alcohol. Passenger Daniel Williams, 31, had two active warrants and a third passenger was consuming alcohol Trull purchased for her. Trull was arrested and charged with violating conditions of release and furnishing alcohol to a minor. Trooper Wuthenow arrested Williams and transported him to the Waldo County Jail.

    Trooper Ferreira responded to a reported vehicle off the road on Togus Road in Chelsea. Upon arrival on scene the vehicle was unattended. Trooper Ferreira made contact with Robert Lewis, 50, on the side of Togus Road in Chelsea. Lewis was ultimately charged with operating under the influence.

    Trooper Smith located and arrested Arline MacNeil, 36, on Pond Road in Burnham for an outstanding warrant. She was transported to the Waldo County Jail.

    Trooper Wuthenow stopped a vehicle on School Street in Unity and smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Jill Raven, 30, was in possession of a useable amount of marijuana and was issued a summons for the offense.

    March 21

    Trooper Wuthenow assisted probation and parole in Belfast with transporting Shae Garton, 25, on a probation hold for failing chemical tests. Garton was brought to Waldo County Jail on the hold.

    Detective Andrews and Trooper Sweeney concluded an investigation by arresting Robert Ayer, 18, of Unity. Ayer was charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, a Class B felony, sexual misconduct with a child under 14 years of age, a class D misdemeanor, and solicitation of a child to commit a prohibited act, a class D misdemeanor.

    Trooper Macdonald stopped a vehicle on Route 3 in China for having an expired registration sticker. James Paine, 24, was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle with an expired registration greater than 150 days.

    Trooper Bureau stopped Gerald Allen, 33, on Route 202 in Unity for a speed violation. Trooper Bureau detected the odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle. Allen refused the standard field sobriety tests and refused to provide a chemical test. Allen was charged with operating under the influence.

    Trooper Allen stopped Michael Shea, 32, of Waterville, on Main Street in Albion for displaying an expired registration. At the time of the offense Shea's license was expired by more than 90 days and he was issued a summons for the offense.

    Trooper Allen arrested James Howe, 36, at his home in China on a warrant for failure to appear.

    March 22

    Trooper Allen stopped Debra Walker, 43, of Whitefield on Route 17 in Windsor for a vehicle defect. Walker's license was under suspension and she was issued a summons for the offense.

    Trooper Allen stopped David Gray, 35, of Chelsea, in Randolph for an expired inspection sticker. Gray's license was expired by more than 90 days and he was issued a summons for the offense.

    Trooper Allen stopped Samuel Ricker, 39, of Pittston, in Gardiner for a vehicle defect. At the time of the stop Ricker had falsely attached plates from another car onto his new vehicle. He was issued a summons for the offense.

    Trooper Robinson stopped Antoinette Godown, 72, of Troy, on Bangor Road in Troy after she made an improper pass. Godown admitted to having a few drinks. Following investigation, she was issued summonses for operating under the influence and driving to endanger.

    Trooper Pelletier stopped Raymond Cohen, 26, on Main Street in Unity for operating a motor vehicle without an inspection sticker. At the time of the traffic stop the plates affixed on the vehicle did not match the registration and Cohen was issued a summons for attaching false plates.

    March 23

    Trooper Smith stopped a vehicle for failure to stop at stop sign on Main Street in Unity. Tracy Hotham, 53, of Oakland, held a suspended license and he was issued summonses for operating after suspension and failure to register a motor vehicle over 150 days.
