Lincolnville middle school soccer collects shutout victory

Mon, 09/30/2019 - 7:30pm

BOOTHBAY HARBOR — The Lincolnville Lynx traveled to Boothbay to challenge the Seahawks on a brisk fall afternoon and emerged triumphant once again.

It was by no means an easy win as the young but very game Seahawks kept the Lynx offense at bay for almost 23 minutes while also staging several dangerous drives on the Lincolnville end.

In the end though, the visitors collected a 3-0 victory.

After having a goal nullified at seven minutes by an offside call and kicking several shots right to Boothbay’s very adept keeper, the Lynx finally got on the board when midfielder Mason Clark sent a long pass forward with 22:51 gone to striker Owen McManus who promptly relayed it to winger Mikayla Talbot. Talbot calmly set her shot up and buried it in the nets.

That was it for the first half, an unusual result for the LCS eleven this season and a testament to the effort put forth by the Boothbay squad.

The Seahawks continued to hold out while the overeager Lynx had two more drives cancelled by offsides, but finally Lincolnville struck again with 45:20 gone when winger Jaden Johnson intercepted a goal kick and sent the ball across the box to Talbot just off the far post. Talbot’s initial shot was blocked and rebounded out to McManus who sent it right back to Talbot who forcefully nailed her second effort in.

The scoring finished at 48:00 when midfielder Mickey Nowell controlled a loose ball near midfield and then sent a through pass forward for winger Jaden Johnson in the clear. Johnson beat the defense by dribbling in quickly before sending a fine cross to McManus who adroitly touched it in.

Roo Boetsch received credit for the shutout in the nets. She was solidly supported by the defensive unit of Liam Day-Lynch, Chloe Day-Lynch, Canyon Palise, and Sage Burgess.

Lincolnville will be hosting its long-term rival Bristol on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Ben Edes is the coach of the Lincolnville soccer team.
