The Belfast Free Library presents an evening of authentic Appalachian music featuring Me & Martha on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 6 - 7:30 p.m., in the Abbott Room.

Martha Hills, a Belfast native, and her husband, Donald DePoy, will perform a free family friendly concert "showcasing their mastery of mellow folk, spirited bluegrass, and sultry swing," said DePoy, in a news release.

"The performance promises to be a memorable homecoming event and a celebration of America 250 years in song," said DePoy.

Martha and Don first met in Belfast in 2000. They started Get Away From It All, a sailboat charter business from Belfast City landing. For eight years they shared their love of sailing with tourists from all over the world. Their musical partnership began in 2003, the time it took Martha to learn to play bass and sing.

"Their complementary talents created an instant musical chemistry that now captivates audiences worldwide," said the news release. "The duo artfully weaves together New England folk melodies, maritime shanties, and regional Maine compositions with Don's authentic Shenandoah Valley Appalachian heritage, creating a distinctive sound that celebrates America's rich rural musical tapestry."

Their dedication to musical excellence has earned significant recognition, including Don's recent nomination for the prestigious 2026 International Bluegrass Music Association Distinguished Achievement Award. In the past 20 years, fifteen as full-time touring musicians, Me & Martha have performed more than 4,500 concerts and workshops. To fulfill their dream of making live music accessible to everyone, they created the Shenandoah Music Trail, a Virginia-based nonprofit. The Music Trail just received a $7500 matching grant from the Virginia Arts Commission to bring music to Virginia’s poorest senior residents and Veterans.

The duo's accolades include 2026 Virginia Living Magazine’s Top Wedding Band for their fifth year. They are members of America's Old-Time Country and Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and appear on traditional artist rosters for Young Audiences of Virginia and the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

"As masters of their craft, Don brings 69 years of stage experience and an extensive repertoire of more than 1,500 songs," said the news release.

Together, Me & Martha draws from a collection of 750 songs, "serving as Flame Keepers they are dedicated guardians of Appalachian musical traditions," said the news release.

"Their performances blend exceptional vocals, intricate harmonies, masterful instrumental skills, and engaging storytelling," said DePoy. "Whether performing in concert halls or busking on street corners, they consistently deliver entertainment that leaves audiences both uplifted and reminded of life's essential joys."
