Dell R. Hyssong, obituary
ROCKPORT — Dell R. Hyssong, 101, died Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta.
Born in Westville, New Jersey, September 29, 1924, he was the son of Dr. John W. and Mary E. Leech Hyssong. Dell was a 1942 graduate of Brunswick High School.
During World War II Dell served in the 4th infantry division in Europe where he was wounded and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After WWII Dell returned home from Europe and married his sweetheart that he met when she was in the 6th grade. Dell and Carolee M. Wilson were married on June 29, 1946. Together they lived in Portland for 6 years while he worked in the general office of the Maine Central Railroad, before moving to Camden. For more than 31 years he worked in the banking business.
For many years Dell served as a Deacon, Choir Director and Assistant Treasurer at the Rockport Baptist Church. He was very active in the Lord’s work. He loved Gospel music and sang in the Harborside Gospel Quartet.
Dell’s favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:28, ‘And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.’
Upon retirement Dell and Carolee moved to South Carolina for 10 years before returning to Maine. Mr. Hyssong was a member of the West Rockport Baptist Church.
He was a life member of the American Legion Post #30 in Camden, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veterans.
Dell was known for his sense of humor and love for his family. He was always willing to help others.
Predeceased by his wife, Carolee M. Hyssong; a sister, Mary Cook; his twin brother, John W. Hyssong, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Steven Hatfield; Dell is survived by his daughter, Carolee H. Hatfield; a son, Rev. Dell R. Hyssong, Jr. and his wife Susan; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; two nieces and four nephews.
In keeping with Dell’s wishes, his family will remember his life privately when he is laid to rest beside his wife.
