Camden’s newest hotel, 16 Bay View Street, awaits coming season

CAMDEN — Christmas by the Sea was much to many, but something out of the ordinary was an open house hosted by Stuart and Mary Ann Smith at their newest hotel, 16 Bay View Street. The renovated building previously was home to Peter Ott’s Restaurant and the former Bay View Street Cinema. Extensive renovations have turned it into lodging that’s being billed as a luxury boutique hotel.
Scheduled to open sometime in late December or early January with 21 rooms, eight on the second and third floors and five on the first, the hotel has a roof top bar where one can gaze out over the harbor while enjoying cocktails. Eight of the rooms are suites with living rooms and separate sleeping quarters.
The rooms feature balconies that offer a good vantage point for watching fireworks.
Camden’s only rooftop bar and terrace has a capacity of 50 people while a function room downstairs on the ground floor can accommodate 120 to 125 people, according to Matthew Levin of Bay View Management.
Stuart Smith said they were going for an industrial look and classic hotel look, but after the balconies were added people commented that it looked more like Bourbon Street of New Orleans' fame.
"I guess I wasn't really thinking that as much as giving it a wrought iron look, but it turned out great," said Smith.
"We had a great crew of people working on it and our son, Tyler, provided a lot of leadership, dedication and inspiration keeping the crew on track and moving ahead all the time," he said.
Smith would not nail down a firm opening date, but said they were getting close, and that they already had a lot of reservations for the coming summer.
He said they took approximately 2,000 people through the hotel on guided tours the two days of open house Friday and Saturday.
"We have just been blown away by the number of people that have come through here," said Smith. "Very positive feedback and extremely exciting to see so many people interested in it."
Mary Ann Smith was responsible for the interior design. Layout was a joint effort between Tyler, Stuart and Mary Ann.
"We tried to look at what was successful for Grand Harbor and Lord Camden inns," said Smith. "And we've tried to incorporate that as much as possible here."
“Make your reservations now for the fireworks," said Mary Ann. "And you can quote me on that."
