My name is Zach Schmesser, and I am running for Belfast City Council in Ward 2.

My wife and I have called Belfast home for eight years, and we’re raising our two children here. I’ve lived in Waldo County off and on since I was 18, and throughout my career I’ve worked alongside Belfast residents, local businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, and government partners. I’ve learned that communities are strongest when people feel heard, respected, and included.

What I outline below is a starting point, not a finished agenda. I don’t believe candidates should arrive with all the answers. I believe we should start by listening.

Meaningful community engagement. I want to meet people where they are — not just at City Hall. I’ll listen early, seek out voices that aren’t always heard, and follow through on what I hear. 

Stronger partnerships. Belfast’s challenges don’t exist in isolation. I’ll build practical, respectful relationships with Waldo County, RSU, businesses, and our state and federal partners to tackle challenges together and leverage resources.

A resilient, affordable local economy. We can support local businesses with predictable processes and fair rules, make smart use of city-owned properties, and support policies that expand housing options while promoting smart growth and responsible economic development — strengthening what makes Belfast special. 

Responsible stewardship of tax dollars. Residents deserve clear, accessible information about city budgets, major decisions, timelines, and opportunities to weigh in.Budgets should reflect community priorities. 

Maintain and modernize what we have. I believe in “fix it first” — prioritizing preventive maintenance for roads, sidewalks, and buildings to improve safety, accessibility, and long-term affordability.

Belfast is full of people with knowledge, experience, ideas, and perspectives that deserve a place in the conversation. I will be an accessible, prepared, collaborative councilor who follows through.
