Why are old barns always painted red?

According to This Old House, farmers built their barns and left them unpainted. Over the years, the harsh elements exposed the wood to rot, so farmers needed to find a way to protect it. Paint seemed to be the obvious solution and with white paint more expensive than red paint,  farmers opted for red.  Another reason is that red absorbed heat more than bare wood and kept the inside of the barn warmer during the winter months.
